Fox Glacier Hike

Well, we had a rip roaring time at the bar next door last night, so Dave and I were the last ones on the bus to breakfast this morning!

After breakfast, we met our guide, Graham, who took us on a hike on Fox Glacier, which is just about 10 minutes drive from our hotel, the Westhaven. He described the action of the glacier and where it has been located at different times in history. It has had periods where it has both grown and retreated in recent years. It is always changing, shifting and melting so different features appear and disappear which makes it interesting for the guides. We were given crampons which we strapped on over our boots and we used walking sticks. It is very disconcerting to walk on hard ice, though for the ascent, steps had been cut using an ice ax.

The weather was clear enough, with low rain clouds and we had sprinkling rain throughout our glacier hike. Now we’re back at the Westhaven and we have a couple of hours to do laundry and hang out.
